GATHERING
The inaugural Global Performance and Sound Lab gathering took place on October 18th and 19th, 2025 at Rutgers University-Newark and New York University thanks to colleagues at the Department of Art, Culture and Media, Express Newark, the Clement A. Price Institute, and Clement’s Place and Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University-Newark and the Colloquium for Unpopular Culture and Performance Studies at NYU, and support from the Rutgers University-Newark Chancellor’s Impact Seed Grant for the Decolonizing Curatorial and Museum Studies Project.
The First Gathering included a core group of practitioners who are active in the field as creatives, practitioners, organizers, researchers, and scholars or a combination of these. Foci at the gathering included decolonizing practices, diaspora and embodied practices, ritual, community engagement, contemporary Indigenous art, engagements with archives/collections/presenting practices, technologies, interdiscplinary pratices, and the eco crisis.
